  8.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To determine the properties of Viruses produced by an SIVsm
  9.        chronically infected cell line. METHODS: Particles were examined by
  10.        e.m., by infectivity assays (in vitro and in vivo) and by immunoblots.
  11.        Nucleic acid was partially sequenced. RESULTS: Defective particles were
  12.        immature. The contained env and gag proteins but lacked vpx and vpr. A
  13.        1.6 kb genome deletion was observed. Particles were not infectious yet
  14.        they were immunogenic, and elicited neutralizing antibodies when
  15.        inoculated with and adjuvant to naire rhesus macaques. DISCUSSION AND
  16.        CONCLUSION: The approximately 1.6 kb deletion possibly involves
  17.        integrase, vif, vpr, and vpx. Some of these enzymes are required for
  18.        viral replication in vitro as well as in vivo. This immunogenic
  19.        particles could be used as a model for the study of vaccines against
  20.        pathogenic SIV.
